About Overhailes

Overhailes Farm is situated in the heart of East Lothian between the quiet village of East Linton and the historic town of Haddington.  The farm is now mainly arable, though we have some cattle during the Winter months.  The Wright family have farmed at Overhailes since the 1950's.

The farm overlooks the River Tyne and Hailes Castle, originally built in the late 1200's but later expanded during the 1300's and 1400's.  East Lothian is home to a number of other castles (Dirleton, Tantallon and the remains of Dunbar Castle) and numerous other attractions such as the Scottish Seabird Centre, the Museum of Flight (where you can explore Concorde) and the Myreton Motor Museum.

Overhailes farmhouse was built around 1780, though parts have been added and removed over the years.  In 2002 it was completely renovated, with only the stone staircase and four outer walls standing at one point!

The Wright family welcome guests to their farm.  It is a beautiful area where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural retreat and re-charge from the hectic pace we all seem to live these days.

Seeing and doing

For those that prefer to 'do' rather than 'see' there is plenty to keep you occupied in close proximity to Overhailes. Traprain Law is a short walk from the farm, and there are many beautiful walks in the area. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at nearby Markle Fisheries where they can practically guarantee trout of all sizes! The deep pool in front of the castle is also a popular spot for fishing on the Tyne. There are numerous beaches in East Lothian (Tyninghame, Yellowcraig and John Muir Country Park are amongst the best). East Lothian is famous for it's many challenging golf courses if you are looking to 'ruin a good walk' Whitekirk Golf and Country Club, Luffness, Muirfield, Gullane, The GlenHaddington and Dunbar are all within easy reach.

Eating and Drinking

There are some great restaurants very close to Overhailes.  East Linton (a mile away) boasts the Linton Hotel, which has a friendly bar mostly catering for pre-dinner drinks.  Good food, (great cheeseboard the last time I ate there)!  The Crown (pub), also in East Linton is another local option.  The Eastern Eye in Haddington (5 miles away) is a favourite as well. Great Bhuna - yummy!

Further afield, The Rocks in Dunbar (15-20 minute drive) is another popular eatery in East Lothian.

If you're heading into the Lammermuir hills, for a nice long walk or some 'big cat' spotting, try The Garvald Inn.  On the coastal side of East Lothian there are plenty of restaurants in North Berwick and in Gullane you'll find the Old Clubhouse and the Golf Inn, both of which will quench your thirst and provide you with a hearty meal.
